What Is Ibogaine?

Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive alkaloid found in the root bark of the African shrub Tabernanthe iboga, commonly known as iboga. For generations, iboga has been used ceremonially within the Bwiti spiritual traditions of Gabon and Central Africa for healing, initiation, and spiritual connection.

Ibogaine is one of the primary active compounds within the iboga plant and is known for its profound psychoactive and therapeutic effects. Today, it is being researched for its potential to support people struggling with addiction, trauma, depression, PTSD, and other deeply rooted conditions.

Many individuals describe ibogaine as helping interrupt destructive patterns while creating a unique window for emotional insight, nervous system reset, and meaningful behavioral change.

Iboga vs. Ibogaine

Although closely related, iboga and ibogaine are not the same thing.

Iboga refers to the whole plant medicine, typically the root bark, which contains many naturally occurring alkaloids. Traditional iboga ceremonies often involve larger amounts of root bark and can produce long, physically demanding, and deeply spiritual experiences.

Ibogaine, on the other hand, is a purified extract of one of iboga’s primary alkaloids. Because its dosage and composition can be measured more precisely, ibogaine is more suitable for medically supervised therapeutic work.

At IbogaQuest, we primarily work with purified ibogaine because it allows for:

  • more accurate dosing
  • clearer therapeutic protocols
  • individualized treatment planning
  • reduced physical burden on the body
  • greater cardiovascular safety monitoring

This precision is especially important when supporting individuals detoxing from substances or seeking the neurological and psychological benefits that ibogaine offers.

Neurological Effects & Current Research

In recent years, researchers have become increasingly interested in ibogaine’s effects on the brain and nervous system. Current research and clinical observations suggest that ibogaine helps “reset” certain neurological and behavioral patterns associated with addiction, trauma, depression, and chronic stress.

Unlike many substances that primarily affect a single receptor system, ibogaine interacts with multiple neurotransmitter systems at once, including serotonin, dopamine, glutamate, acetylcholine, and opioid receptors. This broad activity may help explain why the experience can feel both deeply psychological and profoundly physical.

One area of particular interest is neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize, form new neural connections, and interrupt entrenched patterns of behavior and thought. Researchers are also studying ibogaine’s metabolite, noribogaine, which remains in the body longer (for up to 3 months post treatment) and contributes to mood stabilization, reduced cravings, and emotional processing after treatment.

Many participants describe the experience as creating a temporary “window of opportunity” in which compulsive behaviors, withdrawal symptoms, depressive states, and trauma-related patterns become more workable and less rigid. With proper support and integration, this period can allow for meaningful therapeutic work and lasting life changes.

There is also growing interest in ibogaine’s role in supporting recovery from traumatic brain injury (TBI), PTSD, and nervous system dysregulation. A recent study from Stanford University by Dr. William Nolan, observed significant improvements in veterans suffering from TBI, PTSD, depression, and cognitive impairment following ibogaine treatment, contributing to increasing scientific interest in ibogaine’s neurological and neuroplastic effects.

At IbogaQuest, we follow this emerging research closely while remaining grounded in our own clinical observations and experience gathered over the past 17 years.

We understand ibogaine not as a standalone cure, but as a powerful catalyst that can open a window for healing, transformation, and nervous system reorganization when combined with proper preparation, support, integration, and personal commitment.

Working With Iboga Root Bark

Although we primarily work with purified ibogaine, there are occasions where we may work with small amounts of total alkaloid extract or iboga root bark in a microdosing context following treatment.

Microdosing iboga root bark can offer a gentler and more gradual relationship with the plant. Some individuals report increased introspection, emotional grounding, clarity, energy, and support during the integration process.
